The Vance County finance director, Katherine Bigelow, has been fired from her position after allegedly misrepresenting her qualifications. Bigelow claimed to be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), but County Manager Renee Perry discovered that this was not true. The county cited its personnel policy on “detrimental personal conduct” as the reason for Bigelow’s termination. According to the policy, this includes behavior that impairs the functioning of the county, threatens the safety of persons or property, or violates government laws. Perry stated that she was unsure why Bigelow’s misrepresentation was not caught sooner, considering Bigelow’s tenure began in November 2023. WRAL News inquired about any potential inconsistencies in the county’s budget due to Bigelow’s false qualifications, and Perry confirmed that there are currently no issues. Chuck Murray will serve as the interim finance director starting on February 19th.
